Pulau Weh (or We) is a small volcanic island located in the northwest of the island of Sumatra.The island was once connected with the island of Sumatra, but then separated by the sea after the last volcanic eruption in the Pleistocene era.The island is located in the Andaman Sea. The largest city in Pulau Weh, Sabang, is the most western city located in Indonesia.The island is famous for its ecosystem. Government of Indonesia has established the region as far as 60 km ² of the island edges either inside or outside as nature reserves.Sharks big mouth can be found on the coast of this island. In addition, this island is the only habitat of threatened status of frogs, Bufo valhallae (genus Bufo).Coral reefs around the island is known as a habitat for many species of fish.
Geography
Pulau Weh is located in the Andaman Sea, where two groups of islands, namely Andaman and Nicobar Islands,scattered in a line from Sumatra to Burma plate. Andaman Sea is located in a small tectonic plates are active.Complex fault system and volcanic island arc formed along the sea by tectonic plate movement.
This island stretches along 15 kilometers (10 miles) on the northernmost tip of Sumatra. The island is just a small island with an area of ​​156.3 km ²,but it has a lot of mountains. The highest peak of this island is a volcano with a height of 617 meters fumarolik (2024 feet).The last eruption of this mountain is estimated to occur in the Pleistocene era. As a result of this eruption, a portion of the mountain is destroyed,filled with sea and formed a separate island.
At a depth of nine meters (29.5 feet) near the town of Sabang, underwater fumaroles emerge from the seabed. Volcanic cone can be found in the forest.There are three areas solfatara:one is located 750 meters southeast of the peak and the other is located 5 km and 11.5 km northwest part of the peak on the west coast bay Lhok Perialakot.
There are four small islands surrounding Pulau Weh: Klah, Rubiah, Seulako, and Rondo. Among the four,Rubiah famous as a tourist spot for coral reef diving.Rubiah a haven Indonesian Muslims who perform hajj to sea before and after to Mecca.
